Kamala is a coastal community, and many people who consider living here ask about tsunami preparedness. It is a sensible question. This article explains, using official sources only, how Thailand’s tsunami warning system works, what is listed for Kamala Beach, and what residents and visitors can do for tsunami preparedness.
It does not claim that any place is free of risk. It aims to help you understand the systems in place and the questions worth asking.
Why the question comes up
On 26 December 2004, a magnitude 9.1 earthquake struck along the Sumatra-Andaman subduction zone. According to the US Geological Survey, the tsunami reached Thailand approximately an hour and a half to two hours after the earthquake.
How Thailand’s tsunami warning system works
Thailand’s National Disaster Warning Center (NDWC) monitors earthquakes, sea level and ocean conditions that could indicate a tsunami. When a warning is needed, it is sent out through several channels:
- Warning towers along the Andaman coast. An NDWC presentation from 2023 lists 130 towers across six Andaman provinces.
- SMS and broadcast alerts, including the Broadcast Alert System.
- The Thai Disaster Alert mobile app, published by the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM).
- Official channels and social media.
DDPM and NDWC are also moving to Cell Broadcast, which sends alerts directly to mobile phones in an area, and the 2025 exercise tested procedures that include it.
The warning tower at Kamala Beach
DDPM’s open dataset of warning towers for 2025 lists a tower, numbered WH07, at Kamala in Kathu district. That tells you a tower is part of the official network on this stretch of coast. It does not tell you whether you would hear it from every building, so it is worth asking locally where the nearest tower is and how it is tested.
Tsunami preparedness exercises and drills
Thailand takes part in IOWave, a regular Indian Ocean-wide tsunami exercise. DDPM states that it conducts tsunami exercises every year using IOWave scenarios, and the 2023 exercises involved the six Andaman provinces, including Phuket.
At the provincial level, the official 2023 country report mentions initiatives to create evacuation route signs leading to safe zones, together with public awareness campaigns for residents and tourists. We did not find an official evacuation map for Kamala online, so ask the local authorities or your building management for current routes and assembly points.

Natural warning signs
Official warnings take time. The International Tsunami Information Center, a UNESCO and NOAA partnership, advises people to recognise the natural signs:
- Strong or long ground shaking near the coast.
- A sudden fall in sea level that exposes reefs, rocks or the sea bottom.
Its advice is direct: “Don’t wait for official evacuation orders. Immediately leave low-lying coastal areas. Move inland to higher ground.”
A simple tsunami preparedness plan for residents
Preparation is quick and costs little.
- Install the Thai Disaster Alert app and allow notifications.
- Save the DDPM hotline, 1784, which DDPM lists as available 24 hours.
- Learn your route inland and uphill from home, and walk it once in daylight.
- Agree a meeting point with family or guests in case you are separated.
- Keep a small grab bag with water, a torch, a phone charger, copies of documents and any medicines.
- Tell guests and tenants where to go and how warnings are given.

Tsunami preparedness questions to ask when choosing a home
When you view a residence anywhere on the coast, it is reasonable to ask:
- Where is the nearest warning tower, and can it be heard from the building?
- Does building management have an emergency plan, and how are residents informed?
- What is the route inland or to higher ground from the property?
- Are there drills or information sessions for residents?
The answers help you make an informed choice. They also show how seriously a building takes the safety of the people who live there.
